We moved into the new kitchen area on 4-10-16, slightly behind schedule (just like everything in Hawaii). We found some discounted flooring materials at Home Depot which has added a nice finish to the interior.
I also picked up a tank-less water heater off of Craig’s list and installed that so we officially have a hot outdoor shower now. The interior has been wired with lights and a four outlet plugin that all runs off of our generator. I did all the electrical work my self and it hasn’t burnt down yet so I’m fairly confident it was installed correctly.
As for the main structure, I did about 75% of it by myself and hired a few skilled laborers through out the process to help me along the way. A few guys from work provided me with some discounted roofing materials that they installed a few weeks ago so it’s comfortably dried in.
I screened in the top, sloped portions of the walls to provide adequate ventilation for cooking. My beautiful wife painted the interior and exterior of the structure. The only thing left to do is install trim on the outside corners which I will get to this coming weekend, weather permitting. We caulked and sealed any and every small opening that we could find to keep bugs and rodents out. I think we were both getting sick of the constant battle of these never ending pests in the tent kitchen, it’s nice to have the majority of that battle behind us. All the shelf’s and tables in the new kitchen have freed up some other space inside the storage container so things are gradually becoming more accessible and easier to organize. With the completion of the kitchen and the shower, we are one step closer to being completely comfortable and civilized compared to modern day society. We have a few more things to relocate out of the old tent and then it can be moved and set up as a parking garage for the Jeep, which will also put us one step closer to starting on the permanent house. Hopefully that construction can commence by months end.
Just in case you were wondering, the north facing wall has been coated with a fire retardant paint just in case the gas cook top gets out of control.
