We are always looking for ways to save money here on the island. Fruit is consumed with almost every meal here because it’s so readily available and affordable (for the most part). Lately we’ve been getting some local fruit for free, most of it comes from our neighbors Chuck and Liz or Perry and Dave. Chuck and Liz gave us the oranges and tangerines in this picture. Don’t let the look of them fool you, they have all been very delicious and perfectly ripe.
Perry and Dave have a lot of mature apple banana trees and when they have more then they can eat they always share a rack with us. Much thanks to both of these awesome neighbors who help lighten our financial load with their gifts of fruit, fresh from their own property.
If you pay attention, their is all sorts of places to get free fruit here in Hawaii. The other day while we were in town we noticed the local landscapers cutting off fresh coconuts that hang over the golf course. They would throw them into piles out of the way near the road so we took it upon our selves to go grab a few fresh ones before the sugar ants got to them. Here’s a picture of the ones we collected, getting the milk out is a pain in the ass no matter what kind of tools you have at hand but definitely worth the effort. You can also score free coconuts all over the place down by the ocean, the hard part really is beating the ants to them.
Our good friend Wayne has several locations that he gets free avocados. We haven’t been given the location yet but he’s promised to show us his “secret” spots so we can reap the benefits of these ever producing trees. Here is a picture of some liliquoi from Wayne’s place, the purple ones are a variety he planted and has growing all over the place. The greenish yellow ones are also growing all over the place at his house but they are a wild variety of liliquoi. The seeds are edible and not hard on your teeth at all. The fruit it’s self is very sweet, almost a bitter sweet/tart flavor. Very tasty and who can argue with the price.
We just picked up some fresh mango but I didn’t get any pictures of it. It had better be pretty damn tasty because I’m pretty sure the lady we bought it from ripped us off. Getting sick of hearing about fruit yet?
Can you imagine what it would cost here to get all of this fresh island produce? Amazing!!
